During college had a business with a fellow student to provide forestry management services to landowners. These services included pre-commercial weeding and thinning, tree pruning, tree planting, herbicide application, boundary line maintenance and other technical work folks were willing to pay us to perform.

After graduating worked for the US Forest Service as a forest technician based in the Black Hills. Following that returned east to Long Island, NY and managed a landscape nursery specializing in producing azaleas, rhododendrons and hemlock for a year.

Returned to Maine in 1976 and worked as a district forester with the Maine Forest Service until 1981 when transferred to Bureau of Public Lands. Missed working with forest owners. Left government employment and started in private practice as a consulting forester in late fall of 1981. Since then SMFS Inc. (aka Southern Maine Forestry Services) has grown to employ 5 foresters who manage about 100,000 acres for around 800 clients.
